The SDA’s funding comes from membership dues and event or report sponsorship from a mixture of companies active in the fields of defence, security, transport, pharmaceuticals and IT, national ministries and diplomatic missions, leading national research institutes, international organisations, think tanks and foundations on both sides of the Atlantic. All our members and partners are clearly displayed on all relevant material and on our website. AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD)

The AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe, ASD, represents the aeronautics, space, defence and security industries in Europe in all matters of common interest with the objective of promoting and supporting the competitive development of the sector. It pursues joint industry actions which require to be dealt with on a European level or which concern issues of an agreed transnational nature, and generates common industry positions. ASD has 30 member associations in 20 countries across Europe and represents over 2000 companies with a further 80 000 suppliers, many of which are SMEs. The industry sectors employ around 600 000 people, with a turnover of around €100billion.The President and the Chairman of the Council of ASD for 2005-2006 is Dr. Thomas Enders, the Chief Executive Officer of EADS. The Secretary General of ASD is François Gayet.


Avio is present in Italy and abroad with 16 locations and approximately 4,800 employees. Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)

The Center for Strategic and International Studies provides strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers committed to advancing global security and prosperity. Founded in 1962 by David M. Abshire and Admiral Arleigh Burke, CSIS is a bipartisan, non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C with more than 220 employees. Former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn became chairman of the CSIS Board of Trustees in 1999, and John J. Hamre has led CSIS as its president and chief executive officer since April 2000. On September 16, 2003, CSIS launched its Initiative for a Renewed Transatlantic Partnership. The Initiative is action- and future-oriented, multidimensional, and nonpartisan. It aims to produce a body of studies and an agenda of policy recommendations that take as their premise the fact that transatlantic cooperation lies at the heart of effective responses to the world’s most pressing strategic challenges. In this context, the confluence of a newly enlarged Europe, focused on the ratification of its new constitution, and a United States at the start of a new presidential term makes imperative the need for regular, focused, problem-specific dialogue and high-level strategic thinking among U.S. and European policy experts, politicians, and business and military leaders.

Centre for European Security Studies (CESS)

The Centre for European Security Studies is an independent non-governmental organisation based in the north of the Netherlands. From our tiny office in the old university town of Groningen, we run programmes that focus on democracy in the realm of defence and security. Our mission is to promote transparent, accountable and effective government in the security sector. In pursuit of this aim, we conduct research, provide policy advice, hold debates, organise roundtable discussions and offer training courses. We are able to carry out such a wide range of activities thanks to the co-operation of a wide network experts and partners, mostly based in Europe. The results of these collaborative efforts are presented here under the headings publications and events. Our work is also made possible by the support of governmental and independent sponsors.

CSSD is a modern institution created in 1998 to promote common sustainable agendas between policy makers and academics in security and diplomacy. Based in Birmingham University’s flagship European Research Institute, CSSD balances its European programmes with global activities. The Centre’s strategic heartland is the nexus of democracy and democratic practice, good governance and the rule of law; security and justice. The DCNS group is one of Europe’s leading players on the world market for naval defence systems. European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS)

It is engaged in the scientific study of and the debate on foreign policy, EU integration and international issues focusing on international policy, law, economics, development, defence and security. Egmont is aimed at supporting and strengthening multidisciplinary research on international affairs, mainly on the European Union integration as well as Central African questions. It has close links with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it maintains regularly contacts and co-operates with university research institutions. Egmont organises lectures and debates, seminars, meetings, colloquia, research work and consultancy to Foreign Affairs, publications and runs a documentation centre that is open to the public.

European Defence Agency (EDA)  

The European Defence Agency was established “to support the Member States and the Council in their effort to improve European defence capabilities in the field of crisis management and to sustain the European Security and Defence Policy as it stands now and develops in the future”. High Representative Javier Solana is Head of the Agency and chairman of the Steering Board, its decision-making body composed of Defence Ministers of the 24 participating Member States (all EU Member States, except Denmark) and the European Commission.

Eurisc Foundation  

EURISC Foundation – the European Institute for Risk, Security and Communication Management -, an independent think tank based in Bucharest, Romania was founded in 1995. The main focus is on energy security, critical infrastructures protection, non-military risks, primarily natural hazards, technological and emerging systemic risks, organized crime, corruption, terrorism, illegal migration and trafficking, as well as on the security culture and the civil-military relations acording to Romania’s European and Euro-Atlantic post-integration processes.

The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) is an international foundation that was established in 1995 under Swiss law to “promote the building and maintenance of peace, security and stability”. The GCSP was founded by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, in cooperation with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, as a Swiss contribution to Partnership for Peace (PfP).

Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF)  

The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) promotes good governance and reform of the security sector. The Centre conducts research on good practices, encourages the development of appropriate norms at the national and international levels, makes policy recommendations and provides in-country advice and assistance programmes. DCAF’s partners include governments, parliaments, civil society, international organisations and the range of security sector actors such as police, judiciary, intelligence agencies, border security services and the military.

Hanns Seidel Stiftung  

The Hanns Seidel Stiftung is a registered association dedicated exclusively and directly to public interests. The mission and commitment of the Association is to promote the democratic and civic education of the German population on the basis of Christian values. The foundation also promotes education, popular and vocational training including the support of students, in particular by giving individuals with appropriate talents and character values access to scientific and research training. International Relations and Security Network (ISN)

International Security Information Service Europe (ISIS)
